CHRIS CANTY, born on November 10, 1982 in Bronx, New York to Mr. Joseph Canty and Rev. Shirley L. Canty, is currently a defensive tackle for the New York Giants of the National Football League. Wearing jersey number 99, Canty began his career in the NFL after he was drafted by the Dallas Cowboys in the fourth round of the 2005 NFL Draft.
Canty excelled at sports as a high school student at Charlotte (N.C.) Latin School. In
his junior year, he joined the football team under the leadership of Larry McNulty and
was an All-State tight end and defensive end who finished his high school career 20 catches for 400 yards on offense and 161 tackles, 12 quarterback sacks and 2 fumble recoveries on defense. An impressive figure who towered over most of his competitors, Canty proved he would be a force to reckon with on the field after scoring a 66-yard touchdown reception on a screen pass. Recognized as an up-and-coming athletic superstar, Canty was just as impressive on the court as he lettered twice in basketball, earning All-Conference honors; and his collegiate career would be just as rewarding.
Regarded as one of the Atlantic Coast Conference's premier players under the leadership of Al Groh, in 2001 Canty redshirted as a freshman for the University of Virgina and played in every game as a reserve, totaling 23 tackles (19 solos) and 3 quarterback pressures.
Canty was determined not to let the fact that he missed the first two games of the season in 2002 due to a broken right tibia, and the clash against West Virginia with a fractured left ulna, hurt his performance. He went on to start eight of eleven games and still managed to lead the Atlantic Coast Conference down linemen with 86 tackles (52 solos) that year, adding a pair of sacks, 4 stops behind the line of scrimmage, 4 pass deflections and 3 fumble recoveries. The following year his hard work and determination were rewarded when Canty earned All-ACC second-team honors, as he again led the league's down linemen with a career-high 104 tackles (53 solos), including 4 sacks, 12 stops for losses and a dozen quarterback pressures.
Canty now transitioned from merely performing as an outstanding athlete to one setting records, as this was only the second time in school history that a down lineman made over 100 tackles in a season. A sportsman with respect for the game and his teammates, Canty was voted one of four team captains in 2004. Then, the inevitable happened when Canty suffered a left knee injury in the fourth game against Syracuse when outside linebacker Jermaine Dias fell on his leg after a play. After recovering from surgery performed by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Alabama, Canty focused on the road ahead. Finishing his career with an outstanding 243 tackles (145 solos), 7 sacks for minus-43 yards, 24 stops for losses of 79 yards, 20 quarterback pressures, 4 fumble recoveries, a forced fumble and 6 pass deflections he could not afford to place his focus elsewhere. With NFL training camp around the corner, Canty was now preparing for the NFL draft. CLICK HERE TO READ MORE
